Rai Sahib Gayan Singh: A Visionary Leader of the Ghirth Bahati Chahang Community

Born in 1871 in the village of Ganari, Tehsil Una (now in Himachal Pradesh), Rai Sahib Gayan Singh emerged as a pillar of strength and leadership for the Ghirth Bahati Chahang community. He was the founding father of the Ghirth Bahti Chahang Maha Sabha, which he established in Lahore (now in Pakistan), uniting the community under one platform.

Gayan Singh’s journey was one of resilience and determination. His father, S. Kahan Singh Palial, passed away when he was just six months old. Despite this early loss, Gayan Singh excelled in his studies, securing first position in his middle school examination in 1889 across the entire United Punjab, which then consisted of 29 districts. His outstanding academic achievement earned him a prestigious medal.

In 1904, Gayan Singh was appointed as District Inspector of Schools, where he rendered invaluable services for over two decades in various districts of Punjab. His dedication and commitment were recognized by the Education Department, and in 1927, he was honored with the title of Rai Sahib, a mark of great distinction.

Tragedy struck Gayan Singh again when his only son, Shri Dharm Singh Ji, passed away while in his final year of medical studies (MBBS). This profound loss was a heavy blow, yet Gayan Singh bore it with the grace and strength of a saint.

In 1929, he was appointed Inspector of Schools for the Lahore Division, a prestigious position that brought immense pride not only to him but to the entire community. He continued to serve with distinction, dedicating 32 years of his life to the field of education until his retirement.

Rai Sahib Gayan Singh's contributions were not limited to education. His visionary leadership helped consolidate and inspire the Ghirth Bahati Chahang community, leaving a lasting legacy. His daughter, Smt. Chandravati, followed in his footsteps as a medical professional, continuing the family’s commitment to service.

Rai Sahib Gayan Singh's efforts to register the KGBC Mahasabha have been deeply appreciated, and his work for over 29 years has left an indelible mark on the community. His unwavering dedication, leadership, and selfless service will always be remembered, and the community will remain forever indebted to him for his contributions.
